Educator Workshop - Exploring Our Oceans When: Saturday, Sept. 7, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Where: Von Karman Auditorium, NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, California Audience: Educators for grades 4-12 Overview: The surface of our planet is more than 70 percent water, yet we understand relatively little about our oceans. Oceanography is a window into that great unknown. In this workshop, participants will have a live conversation with a JPL education specialist aboard the E/V Nautilus research vessel to hear how oceanography is being performed today and engage students in exploring our own planet. The workshop will also highlight several classroom activities from NASA/JPL Edu that can be used to connect the science back to the classroom. › Register online Participants should plan to bring a laptop. The workshop is not available online. You must be physically present to attend. Entry is limited to educators at U.S.-based institutions and organizations. Questions? Sea Ice (Grades 2-8) – Students learn the difference between land ice and sea ice and make a model to see how the melting of each impacts global sea level. Lesson: Thermal Expansion Model (Grades 4-12) – Students build a model that demonstrates an important contributor to sea-level rise – how water volume increases when the temperature of the water increases. Lesson: Graphing Sea-Level Trends (Grades 5-12) – In this activity, students will use sea-level rise data to create models and compare short-term trends to long-term trends. They will then determine whether sea-level rise is occurring based on the data. Lesson: Water Filtration Challenge (Grades 5-12) – Students work in teams employing an iterative design process to design and build a water filtration device using commonly available materials. This free workshop is offered through the NASA/JPL Educator Resource Center, which provides formal and informal educators with NASA resources and materials that support STEM learning.
