A Teachable Moment You Can See! The Transit of Mercury Monday, May 9 marks the first transit of Mercury since 2006. The movement of Mercury across the sun's disk, as seen from Earth, provides an opportunity for educators of all kinds to engage students in authentic, real-world problems that address Next Generation Science and Common Core Math Standards. In our latest Teachable Moment, JPL education specialist Lyle Tavernier explains the history of transit observations and shows how scientists use transits today to understand the properties of planets in our own solar system and beyond.
